Drugs are chemical substances that, once consumed, can produce a pleasurable effect for a certain period. However, as soon as this effect ceases, consequences for the body emerge. These consequences affect the person both physically and psychologically, and can undermine their health and lifestyle. Today, we will explain how many individuals use drugs for relaxation and what effects they produce.

How Drugs for Relaxation Affect the Body

All individuals, consciously or unconsciously, have a series of motivations and goals in life that they decide to achieve and that guide their path. But when drugs are taken, the so-called “reward system” becomes altered by their symptoms. Consequently, the person changes their behavior and personality depending on how the chemical substances affect them, thus taking the step towards dependence or addiction and disrupting their routine.

When a person decides to consume, they usually do so because of the sensations produced by taking narcotics, as they cannot otherwise experience the pleasure these substances provide. Some of the best known are drugs for relaxation, also called central nervous system depressants.

Effects of Drugs for Relaxation

Depressant drugs induce a state of accentuated relaxation in the person, accompanied by a reduction in brain activity and a deceleration at a cognitive level. Respiration and heart rate, among other basic vital functions, are affected by the presence of a foreign element in the body, which significantly alters them. If the individual who consumes abuses narcotics or does not maintain a responsible attitude, they may suffer a coma or even death.

It should be mentioned that relaxant drugs produce changes in the person’s internal functioning. On the one hand, if they decide to consume regularly, in addition to the possibility of becoming addicted, their tolerance to drugs increases. This means that each dose will cause a lesser effect than the first time because their body becomes accustomed to the substance. Furthermore, the symptoms of drug withdrawal syndrome also increase when consumption stops.

On the other hand, the characteristic of cross-tolerance develops. The consumption of a narcotic of a specific typology means that all others of the same class will also cause fewer symptoms. That is, if a person regularly abuses alcohol, the anxiolytics they take will have a lesser effect on their body because they belong to the same drug family.

Types of Drugs for Relaxation and Their Consequences

Some of the most commonly consumed narcotics taken for relaxation are the following:

Alcohol

Alcohol is the most consumed legal drug in the world, but also one of the most dangerous, if not the one that generates the most risks. When consuming, necessary precautions must be taken, as intoxication or alcohol poisoning affects the brain and several vital organs. In the short term, it causes mild psychological symptoms and physical ailments. In the long term, it generates diseases that can become chronic.

Benzodiazepines

These are medications that help control some psychological disorders such as anxiety. Through oral intake, the medication affects brain neurotransmitters to regulate their activity. When a person takes them recreationally, they can suffer from drug dependence, and with it, a withdrawal syndrome. Its symptoms cause irritability, negative mood changes, such as hostility, and an increase in tolerance to the drugs in question.

Barbiturates

Barbiturates are another class of depressant medications that were very often used in the 1960s. Today they are administered for surgeries and for the resuscitation of head injuries. However, it is a drug with a high degree of risk due to the consequences it can cause in patients. This is because the recommended therapeutic dose already represents a considerable health hazard. For this reason, over the years they have been progressively replaced by new anxiolytics.

GHB

GHB is another depressant drug, also known as liquid ecstasy. Its appearance takes the form of a transparent liquid with a salty taste. This fact has often led many individuals to consume it unknowingly when it is poured into a drink. Its effect enhances alcohol, and consequently, increases the possibility of suffering an overdose.

Among all drugs for relaxation, this one is popular in nightlife and clandestine activities. Liquid ecstasy induces a state of euphoria and disinhibition, causing in most cases acts of violence, hallucinations, agitation, and the collapse of the person’s emotional state.

Kava

Kava is one of the drugs for relaxation marketed as an alternative medicine to treat acute anxiety. Although there is currently no scientific evidence of its benefits or effects, it is still often used today. Its consumption induces a state of relaxation in the individual without compromising their cognitive functions.

Heroin

Heroin, one of the most consumed drugs in the world and also considered one of the most addictive. It is made from morphine and usually appears as a white powder or as a black, sticky substance, although there are other forms of consumption and administration. Many addicted people usually mix it with cocaine, a factor that often causes their death.

Upon contact with the body, heroin enters the nervous system and activates opioid receptors. In this way, the person achieves accentuated relaxation and enters a state of well-being that they cannot achieve otherwise. However, it is a highly addictive substance that creates both physical and psychological dependence.

CCAdicciones is a center for treating addictions and psychological and physical dependencies that can help you with your problem. Our addiction therapists can contact you and recommend the start of a rehabilitation process.
