Drug use has a series of more or less known effects that jeopardize the health of the user. These symptoms can be both physiological and mental in nature. The greater and more prolonged the consumption over time, the greater the risks to which the body is exposed. We are all exposed to the consequences of a drug addiction<\/a>. However, there are some differences depending on the sex of the consumer. The fact is that both the effects and the personal experience regarding drugs vary between men and women<\/strong>. Recently, studies have appeared that highlight these differences to clarify how males and females relate to addiction. <\/p>\n

Being a man is not the same as being a woman<\/strong><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

One of the problems that has traditionally plagued information on how addiction affects men and women differently was the lack of studies on the effects on the female sex. For many years, research in this field focused exclusively on men as the sole subjects of study. This trend has stigmatized women and their relationship with drugs and addictions due to the lack of information in this regard. For this reason, since the 1990s in the United States, many institutions have been calling for the inclusion of women as participants in studies.<\/strong> Since then, researchers have discovered a series of clear differences regarding addiction between men and women. <\/p>\n

To give just one example, men are more likely to experience drug and alcohol<\/a> abuse than women (11.5% of males over the age of 12 have a substance abuse disorder, compared to 6.4% of females). However, women are more likely to be admitted to emergency rooms or suffer a fatal overdose from drug abuse. <\/p>\n

The differences between men and women in their relationship with addictions stem from both biological and sociological factors.<\/strong> Many researchers explain these differences between the sexes as the result of the impact society has on aspects such as childcare responsibilities or relationship dynamics. There are also a series of biological differences between them based on the production of testosterone and estrogens, as well as body size and composition, which causes drugs to affect the bodies of both sexes differently. <\/p>\n

How does addiction affect both sexes?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In recent years, several studies have sought to examine the differences in how men and women experience addiction. Harvard Medical School<\/a> conducted research focused on aspects such as susceptibility, recovery, and the risk of relapse. By analyzing these three factors, the study confirmed that substantial differences exist between men and women. <\/p>\n

    Susceptibility<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    When facing the addictive potential of drugs, men and women are affected in different ways. Men are more likely to become addicted, while women are more likely to progress from substance abuse to dependence and addiction, and to do so at a faster rate. On the other hand, a characteristic specific to men is that they are more likely to abuse drugs due to peer pressure or the desire to belong to a group. For their part, women are more susceptible to self-medicating<\/a> with illicit substances. <\/p>\n

      Recovery<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Regarding the symptoms and problems of addiction, there are also differences between the sexes. Men are more likely to “stabilize” substance abuse at lower doses than women and also experience more intense alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Women, conversely, are more likely to suffer side effects from drug abuse (such as liver damage) and more overdose episodes. <\/p>\n

        The final aspect focused on in this study analyzed differences regarding the risk of relapse. In this sense, while men have a lower risk of relapsing into drug use and have longer periods of abstinence, women are more likely to experience intense cravings to use again and, consequently, to relapse. <\/p>\n
