The Covid-19 pandemic, along with lockdown and the restrictions that are still in place, have changed the lives of millions of people. Many people have lost their jobs, while others have had to adapt to routines that were new to them until then. <strong>In the area of drugs and <a href=\"https:\/\/ccadicciones.es\/en\/contact\/\">addictions<\/a>, the changes have also been substantial<\/strong>. The new reality that has been imposed has had consequences for consumption patterns. This is reflected in a report by the Spanish Observatory on Drugs and Addictions published this very year. The report in question was carried out between March and June and was based on surveys conducted at both national and European level.     <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Illegal drug use during the pandemic<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA), in collaboration with the different European Union member states, conducted a survey on drug use in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. This survey took place between April 8 and May 31, 2020 and was carried out online. In Spain, it was the <strong>Spanish Observatory on Drugs and Addictions (OEDA)<\/strong> that was responsible for collecting the survey data in our country. A total of 991 people took part, with an average respondent age of 39.8 years.   <\/p>\n<p>56.2% of respondents acknowledged having used an illegal drug in the last year. If we look at the COVID-19 lockdown period, <strong>most people who said they used an illegal substance had stopped or reduced the frequency or amount of their use (71.9%).<\/strong> On the other hand, 16.3% had not changed their habits. Only 11.9% of users admitted having increased the frequency or amount of use. If we look at this behaviour by sex, we can see that the trend is very similar among men and women. However, we find a slightly higher proportion of women who had stopped or reduced their use of illegal substances.    <\/p>\n<p>With regard to the data by substance, it can be seen that <strong>the reduction in use applies to virtually all of them.<\/strong> The only exception is <a href=\"https:\/\/ccadicciones.es\/tratamiento\/tratamiento-cannabis\/\">cannabis<\/a>, where a higher percentage of people have not changed their use or have increased it. This may be due to the greater availability of this drug. Despite having decreased during lockdown, it remains the illegal substance with the greatest availability. In the case of other drugs such as <a href=\"https:\/\/ccadicciones.es\/tratamiento\/tratamiento-cocaina\/\">cocaine<\/a> and heroin, the decrease in use is greater. This is explained in part by the difficulty in obtaining them during this period. Ecstasy and amphetamines also show a clear reduction in use, mainly because their use is closely linked to leisure situations that were cancelled during lockdown.     <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Alcohol consumption during the pandemic<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To look at the data on <a href=\"https:\/\/ccadicciones.es\/tratamiento\/tratamiento-alcohol\/\">alcohol<\/a> consumption during COVID-19 and lockdown, we need to refer to the European Alcohol and COVID-19 Web Survey. This survey was conducted during May and June as a collaboration between several research institutes in Europe. Among the institutes was the participation of Dr. Antoni Gual\u2019s team from Hospital Cl\u00ednic de Barcelona.   <strong>The study was carried out with a total of 39,298 people from 22 European countries.<\/strong> In Spain, the sample included 3,133 participants, with women making up the majority at over 65% of the total. In addition, respondents\u2019 ages ranged between 35 and 54 years, with a majority having higher education (83.6%). <\/p>\n<p>The survey data show that alcohol consumption during this period tended to decrease or stabilise. This refers both to frequency of consumption, the number of drinks on each occasion, and episodes of heavy drinking (more than 6 drinks in the same session). Thus, <strong>the percentage of respondents showing a reduction in these three factors is approximately 40%.<\/strong> By contrast, in all three cases, the percentage of people who say they increased the frequency of consumption, the number of drinks, or episodes of heavy drinking is clearly lower.  <\/p>\n<p>These data could conflict with figures showing that there was an increase in the purchase of alcoholic beverages during this period compared to the same period the previous year. <strong>In March, the increase in the purchase of beers and wines was 22.2% and 2%, respectively.<\/strong> In April, the increase was 19.8% for beers and 3.3% for wines.
