People who use a drug do so with the aim of experiencing a series of pleasurable sensations that last for a certain period of time. Among the substances considered stimulants is one that has gained popularity in recent years.<\/strong> We are referring to alkyl nitrite, commonly known as popper<\/em>, one of the quintessential sexual drugs. Traditionally associated with the gay community, its use has become widespread and, today, many young people of all sexual orientations use it to increase sexual desire and pleasure. Its addictive potential<\/a> is very high, and it is very easy to find on the market; it can even be bought on platforms such as Amazon. <\/p>\n

What is popper<\/em>?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Alkyl nitrites, or poppers<\/em>, are nitrous acid esters that come in the form of a highly volatile, colourless or yellowish liquid at room temperature, with a fruity smell. They are generally sold in small, colourful containers of varying volume (the most common sizes are 10 and 24 ml). Even today, they are the most widely used volatile inhalants worldwide.<\/strong> Although amyl nitrite is the best known, over the years variations have been introduced in the alkyl group, often to circumvent legal restrictions. Thus, butyl, isobutyl or isopropyl nitrites have been marketed as poppers<\/em>. <\/p>\n

In general terms, poppers are part of a group of chemical substances known as alkyl nitrites. Although many people perceive them as a low-risk recreational substance, their use is linked to the phenomenon of new drugs<\/a>, especially due to their easy access, their use in leisure settings, and the lack of awareness about their effects. <\/p>\n

These substances are consumed by nasal inhalation of the vapours released, given the drug\u2019s high volatility in liquid form. Although the enormous diversity of presentations and brands makes dosing difficult, a more or less experienced user can regulate the dose consumed based on the depth of inhalations once they know the product. Popper<\/em> is used in various contexts, mainly in party and music environments.<\/strong> On the other hand, its pre-coital use is one of the best known, especially among male homosexual users. <\/p>\n

Effects of popper<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Although some people downplay its risks due to the short duration of its effects, repeated use can be part of a pattern of drug abuse<\/a>, especially when combined with alcohol, stimulants or other substances. Popper\u2019s main mechanism of action is related to its vasodilatory effect. This means it causes a rapid dilation of blood vessels, leading to a sudden sensation of warmth, dizziness, disinhibition and euphoria. However, this reaction can also cause blood pressure to drop sharply, which explains symptoms such as vertigo, weakness, tachycardia or even fainting in some users. Health sources describe alkyl nitrites as vasodilators capable of dilating blood vessels and lowering blood pressure. <\/p>\n

After taking amyl nitrite, the user experiences a sudden state of euphoria accompanied by a sensation of warmth, probably secondary to generalised vasodilation. The most common effects after use are: <\/p>\n
