According to a CSIC study, inhaling cannabis can cause schizophrenia.<\/h3>\n

A recent study conducted in Spain by the CSIC<\/a> in collaboration with the Cajal Institute has found evidence on how cannabinoids regulate the activation of certain nervous regions of the brain, potentially causing schizophrenia.<\/p>\n

Several CSIC scientists have pointed out that the abuse of inhaled cannabis can lead to transient psychotic episodes. If the harmful habit is not eliminated, the deterioration of the central nervous system could become permanent, and the likelihood of developing schizophrenia would increase. <\/p>\n

Disorganized cannabis use can deactivate a mechanism more intensely than necessary, potentially causing mental disorders such as psychosis or schizophrenia. Several genetic factors increase the vulnerability of some individuals to this pathology. However, environmental factors and harmful habits like marijuana use can accelerate symptoms or increase their intensity. <\/p>\n

Our neuronal chemistry’s own cannabinoid system is positive because it regulates the binding of glutamate to its NMDAr receptor. This allows for certain neurological processes like memory and learning. However, the system’s stability is easily compromised. Exogenous cannabinoids (those produced by the use and abuse of marijuana) significantly increase the inhibition of the NMDAr receptor of the glutamate neurotransmitter, exacerbating the effect of dopamine and potentially causing psychosis. In this situation, the brain tries to prevent the effect from occurring, and certain NMDAr receptor release mechanisms are activated. But this reaction can deactivate the neuronal system and create a vulnerability that could trigger schizophrenia. <\/p>\n
