A study conducted by the journal “Translational Psychiatry”<\/a> concludes that individuals affected by ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) are more susceptible to developing addictions.<\/p>\n

ADHD and Addictions<\/h2>\n

According to the researchers, the key lies in the genetic variations of individuals. In some cases, these are people with a greater predisposition to develop this disorder. On the other hand, they may also favor attraction to certain substances such as tobacco, alcohol, or cannabis, among others, opening the possibility of suffering from an addiction. <\/p>\n

This study, which has been carried out by Spanish researchers, has been tested with approximately 2,700 patients of all ages. Scientists from the Faculty of Biology, the Institute of Biomedicine of the University of Barcelona (IBUB)<\/a>, and the Vall d’Hebron Institut de Recerca (VHIR)<\/a> have participated in its development. <\/p>\n

The Study Results<\/h2>\n

Some of the most striking points of the study are, on the one hand, that children<\/a> with ADHD show greater substance use compared to others who do not have the disorder. On the other hand, if they continue to manifest ADHD in their adult stage, it is estimated that they have a 50% probability of suffering from an addiction at some point. <\/p>\n

The study’s conclusions state that genetic variations of the LPHN3 gene are responsible for the increased dependence on drugs. Although not all individuals who suffer from this disorder end up developing an addiction, it is stated that its development depends 25% on environmental factors. <\/p>\n
