The DGT proposes implementing a zero alcohol limit in Spain<\/h3>\n

We heard this in the interview with Gregorio Serrano, Director General of the Directorate General for Traffic (DGT), on COPE. Serrano has admitted the possibility of lowering the blood alcohol limit and implementing a zero limit<\/strong> for young and professional drivers. <\/p>\n

“That is a very reasonable thing,” Serrano comments. He recalls that “in many countries there is a zero-zero limit, meaning you cannot drink absolutely anything, and the driver has no doubts about whether half a beer will test positive or not.” In Spain, the limit for novice and professional drivers is currently 0.15 mg\/liter in exhaled air, and 0.25 for drivers in general. <\/p>\n

Serrano has reiterated the Government’s commitment to “very seriously consider the matter of the zero limit and ensure that this country becomes a place where driving on the roads, especially for those under the influence of alcohol, is more difficult and they feel society breathing down their necks.”<\/p>\n

The Director of the DGT has also recalled that the Ministry of the Interior is working on reforming the Traffic and Road Safety Law to “attempt to provide solutions and address all matters relating to penalties and driving under the influence of alcohol.” Following recent incidents of cyclists being run over by drivers under the influence of alcohol and drugs, these include the revocation of driving licenses, citing lack of “psychophysical aptitude.” Juan Ignacio Zoido, Minister of the Interior, has recalled the urgent measures announced this week. <\/p>\n

Regarding these measures announced last Tuesday by the Minister, Ignacio Zoido explains that the repeat offender for alcohol and drugs “does not have a problem with not knowing the traffic code,” but rather “is intoxicated or is a drug addict and therefore cannot be treated like a person who does not wear a seatbelt or exceeds the speed limit.” Therefore, he defends that when the Traffic Headquarters “suspects that someone may have lost their psychophysical aptitude, their driving license will be withdrawn until they are evaluated by the health service, and if confirmed, they will not drive again until they overcome that condition.” <\/p>\n
