One of the most frequent questions when someone comes to an addiction center is whether there is a single therapy that works for any type of addiction. The answer is no. There are different types of addictions and, therefore, different ways to address them therapeutically.
Generally speaking, they can be classified into two broad groups: substance addictions and behavioral addictions. The former include the consumption of alcohol, illegal drugs, tobacco, or medications with addictive potential, such as anxiolytics or opioids. The latter do not involve a chemical substance, but generate a strong psychological dependence. Here we find pathological gambling, addiction to mobile phones, sex, masturbation, social media, or video games.
In the case of substance addictions, it is common to begin with a medical detoxification phase, where the use of medications may be necessary to relieve withdrawal symptoms, stabilize emotional state, or control anxiety. This stage must always be carried out under professional supervision, as some withdrawal syndromes can pose health risks.
In contrast, behavioral addictions do not require physical detoxification, but do require in-depth work at the psychological level specialized in addictions. Therapy focuses on modifying automatic thoughts, managing impulses, and working on self-esteem, as they are often linked to emotional deficiencies or difficulties in tolerating discomfort.
Whatever the type of addiction, addiction therapy must be comprehensive and personalized. It is not just about stopping the addictive substance or behavior, but about understanding why it appeared, what function it serves in the patient’s life, and how to replace it with healthy and stable habits.
This is where the professional team plays a key role. Many people confuse the role of the psychologist with that of the psychiatrist, when in reality they are complementary figures. The psychologist focuses on the emotional and behavioral aspects: helping to identify negative patterns, regulate emotions, and develop tools for change. The psychiatrist, on the other hand, is a physician and can diagnose associated disorders (such as anxiety or depression) and prescribe medication if deemed necessary.
