Fentanyl addiction: a silent threat that is growing in Europe and needs specialised detox centres

por CC Adicciones

Fentanyl addiction has become a growing concern worldwide, especially following the severe crisis facing the United States, where this synthetic opioid has caused thousands of overdose deaths. Despite being a prescription medication used to relieve severe pain, its addictive potential is extremely high, even surpassing drugs such as cocaine or heroin.

The case of the United States: a warning for Europe

In the United States, fentanyl began to be widely used as a painkiller in palliative care and post-operative pain. However, its use has spiralled out of control due to overprescribing and illegal access. This has led to a fentanyl addiction epidemic that has claimed more than 70,000 lives a year, becoming one of the leading causes of death among young adults.

The problem is that fentanyl is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine, which means that even small doses can be lethal. In addition, it is often mixed with other drugs without the user knowing, increasing the risk of accidental overdose.

A drug that is more addictive than cocaine

Although fentanyl is an authorised medication prescribed under medical supervision, repeated use leads to rapid and profound dependence. Its immediate effect on the central nervous system produces a feeling of relief and euphoria that many patients want to repeat. Over time, a higher dose is needed to achieve the same effect, opening the door to a dangerous spiral of use.

Unlike other drugs such as cocaine, which acts on the dopaminergic system, fentanyl directly affects the brain’s opioid receptors, which are associated with pain control and pleasure. This direct and powerful action is why fentanyl addiction develops so quickly and so devastatingly.

Fentanyl reaches Spain

Although in Spain the situation has not reached the levels seen in the United States, cases of illegal fentanyl mixed with other drugs, such as heroin or cocaine, have already been detected. This combination, known in street slang as “speedball” or “china blanca”, is highly dangerous due to its unpredictable effects and the high risk of overdose.

Health authorities have warned of an increase in seizures of these substances, and various reports suggest that fentanyl is entering the European market through illegal channels. This poses an urgent challenge for health systems, which must be prepared to detect and treat people affected by this addiction.

Overcoming fentanyl addiction: a comprehensive process

Overcoming fentanyl addiction is not easy and requires a multidisciplinary approach. The first step is recognising the dependence, something that is often difficult for both the affected person and their family. Once the problem has been identified, it is essential to have professional support to begin a safe detox process.

Treatment usually includes a phase of medically supervised detox, followed by individual and group psychological therapy. In many cases, medications are also used to manage withdrawal symptoms and prevent relapse. The duration and approach of treatment will depend on the degree of dependence and the patient’s environment.

A detox centre specialised in fentanyl

Going to a fentanyl detox centre is especially recommended when the person:

  • Has tried to stop using on their own without success.
  • Has severe physical or psychological symptoms.
  • Has suffered an overdose or has been at risk of one.
  • Requires a medically controlled environment with no access to substances.

In these cases, a residential therapeutic setting offers the best guarantees of recovery, as it provides 24-hour medical care (and that is where the big difference lies), specialised professionals, and an individualised plan tailored to each patient.

At CC Adicciones, we have Spain’s first residential therapeutic centre with a health registration, recognised as the country’s best detox centre in 2024.
