Demand for Drug Use Treatment

by CC Adicciones

Data on assistance and care for drug dependencies in Catalonia, managed by the Subdirectorate General of Drug Dependencies of the Public Health Agency of Catalonia, has recently been published. The data is quite revealing. During the past year, 13,944 individuals have started treatment for drug abuse. This number is similar to previous years, but a variation has been noted in the number of cases for treating certain substances.

The most requested treatments are for drug abuse involving alcohol, cocaine, cannabis, heroin, and tobacco.

Alcohol

Alcohol remains in first position with a demand of 42.2% of the total and with a high morbidity and mortality rate.

Cocaine

In second position we find cocaine, with 23.9% of cases. The use of this substance has been increasing since 2017, after six years of decline.

Cannabis

With 13.8% of demand, we find cannabis. In 2015 it reached its maximum number of requests, and since then it has been decreasing.

Heroin

Treatments for heroin represent 11.9% of cases. Only 11% are starting treatment for the first time, suggesting a lower demand.

Tobacco

Finally, we find tobacco. It represents 3.7%, which translates to a total of 521 cases.

Regarding the profile of users, it varies depending on the substance. For alcohol, treatment in women is 48.1% and 40.4% in men. This is followed by cocaine with 18.9% of treatments in women and 25.4% in men. These proportions are maintained for other substances, except for heroin and cocaine use, where there are more treatments among men.
