The risks of drug use abroad according to the Ministry of Health.

Coinciding with the arrival of July and the start of vacations for many Spaniards, the Ministry of Health‘s 2016 summer campaign has launched with the slogan “Drugs change your destination.” The objective is to raise awareness about drugs when traveling abroad.

The campaign aims to raise public awareness of the dangers posed by drugs when traveling abroad. These are responsible for the fact that currently, 3 out of every 4 Spanish citizens detained in prisons outside our borders are there for offenses related to drug use or trafficking. Approximately 1,050 Spaniards remain detained in foreign prisons for these offenses.

Raise awareness, educate, and deter.

The Government Delegation for the National Drug Plan of the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality and the NGO Movement for Peace, all promoters of the campaign, state in the press release that with this initiative they seek to warn of the risks of using or trafficking drugs while traveling and the consequences that possession, trafficking, and drug use abroad can have.

The objective is also to deter individuals who attempt to introduce drugs into other countries, thinking that this way they will be able to obtain quick financial gain.

Thus, both practices are penalized with imprisonment under severe conditions. We have been able to verify this through television programs that delve into the harsh reality of foreign prisons. As an example, here is a segment from the program “Encarcelados” on La Sexta:
