Drug use among children is increasing in the United States.
An alarming new study conducted in the United States shows that most parents are completely unaware of whether their child is using drugs. Parents think they know about drug problems and their children, but apparently they do not.
The report comes from the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, based in Plymouth. Hazelden is nationally recognized for its drug treatment program.
“Although drug use is increasing, parents are very misinformed,” according to the study, which surveyed nearly 2,500 parents. Nearly six out of 10 parents of children aged 12 to 24 say they are not concerned about their children’s use of alcohol and other drugs in the U.S. But perhaps they should take a look at a national study by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. It shows that more and more children are using marijuana and other drugs.
The Hazelden study also shows that parents believe they know what is going on. But in reality, they do not. Nearly eight out of 10 parents surveyed said they believe they have enough education about children’s drug and alcohol use, but parents could only name two of the eight warning signs that we will publish in another article.
