Cannabis increases the risk of osteoporosis

The conclusions of a study conducted by researchers from the University of Edinburgh (Scotland) were released this week. This study links cannabis use to the risk of suffering from osteoporosis. A bone disease characterized by a decrease in bone tissue density, resulting in excessive bone fragility.

The study found lower body weight and a reduction in body mass index among heavy cannabis users. This could also contribute to bone thinning and may explain why they face a higher risk of osteoporosis.

The study involved 170 people who smoked marijuana regularly for recreational purposes and 114 who were not considered users of the drug. The authors used an X-ray scanner to measure their bone density. They found that the bone density of heavy cannabis users was 5% lower than that of tobacco smokers who did not use cannabis.
