29 million suffer from drug-related disorders; how many receive treatment?

Drug use has not increased in 4 years, but more than 29 million people suffer from related disorders.

The recently published “World Drug Report 2016”, prepared by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), reflects that drug use does not appear to have increased in the last four years in proportion to the world population. Thus, it is estimated that 1 in 20 adults—around 250 million people between the ages of 15 and 64—consumed at least one drug in 2014. However, the impact of drug use remains devastating for the health of those who ingest, inhale, or inject them.

According to the report, it is estimated that more than 29 million people who use drugs suffer from related disorders. Of these, 12 million use drugs by injection, and 14% live with HIV, the AIDS virus. The number of drug-related deaths remains stable compared to 2014. Approximately 207,400, or 43.5 deaths per million people between the ages of 15 and 64.

Given this global landscape, how many people with drug-related disorders undergo treatment? The following infographic reveals the severity of the problem:

In future installments of the CC Adicciones blog, we will explain more interesting details from the UNODC report.
