Video game addiction is a problem that particularly concerns parents of teenagers. Finally, the WHO has recognized that video game addiction is a mental illness. After 10 years of consideration and work with mental health professionals, months after adding video game addiction to its list of potentially harmful behaviors, this illness will be included in the next edition of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-11), which will come into force on January 1, 2022.
This inclusion has generated controversy. On one hand, the video game industry argues for a reconsideration of this decision because, according to them, this disorder is not based on sufficient and strong evidence.
According to this classification, video game addiction is primarily characterized by a pattern of recurrent gaming behavior, whether continuous, episodic, online, or offline.
Some of its effects include loss of control over gaming (onset, frequency, duration, intensity, termination, and context in which it is played), increased priority given to gaming over other daily activities or interests, and maintaining this behavior (or increasing it) despite its negative consequences.
The main reason currently considered is the significant deterioration of the person at a personal, family, social, educational, occupational, or other important levels.
The effects of this illness are usually evident for at least 12 months. Only after this period can a person suffering from this pathology be diagnosed. However, this period may vary and be shorter for those who meet all diagnostic requirements and have severe symptoms.
