Inhaling pure cocoa among young people as a new trend in the United States
A new youth trend is emerging in the United States. It involves inhaling pure cocoa, a product that is completely legal and available on the market. However, it raises doubts about whether its consumption is advisable and if it poses a threat to the health of young people.
Many people view this new trend as a continuation of energy drinks. The product combines pure cocoa with ginkgo biloba, a plant stimulant that enhances blood circulation. It also contains guarana seeds, rich in caffeine, and taurine, a common component of the aforementioned drinks. This mixture is sold under the name Coco Loko. Marketing defines it as an infusion of “euphoric energy,” and young people call it a “high.”
The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has not commented on the matter because it is neither a medicine nor a food. There have not yet been any “consumer complaints or illnesses” associated with this new cocoa inhalation trend. However, its consumption has raised skepticism among some doctors who assert that, while it may seem innocuous in the short term, that does not mean it is harmless.
There have been calls to observe what happens with this product. Andrew Lane, director of the Johns Hopkins Hospital Sinus Center, told The Washington Post that “no one has studied what happens if you snort chocolate up your nose.” Lane admitted that this might be because he is not “in the loop,” but he was reluctant to have anyone fill their nasal cavities with cocoa, as the long-term effects are unknown. However, he stated that he is not concerned that this could be considered a gateway drug.
