The difficult relationship between dual pathology in women and employment

by CC Adicciones

Only 10% of women with dual pathology remain in employment

According to the El País article, a group of more than 200 experts gathered at Vall d’Hebron Hospital in Barcelona estimate that only 10% of women with dual pathology (an addiction and another mental disorder) remain in employment. Experts consider “a gender-specific approach” necessary, as well as rebuilding their self-esteem to maintain family, social and work ties.

Women in this situation use legal drugs (alcohol and benzodiazepines). They also suffer from mental disorders such as anxiety and depression. Unlike men, who tend to suffer from psychotic disorders and are addicted to illegal substances.

There is also an aggravating factor that complicates the situation in the family and social sphere. Men tend to seek healthy partners, whereas women tend to become romantically involved with partners who also suffer from addictions.

Deeper effects

For every three male diagnoses there is one female, but the effects of the illness are more profound in women. Up to 70% of patients suffer from depression and at least 50% are victims of gender-based violence. Psychiatrists warn that these patients face stigma and complex legal issues, such as assessing their ability to care for their children. They arrive at the consultation in a worse state due to shame and “what people will say”.

In addition, women suffer severe employment and economic exclusion because they are more vulnerable to the side effects of substance use.

What is Dual Pathology?

Dual Pathology can be defined, according to the Spanish Society of Dual Pathology (SEPD), as an illness that refers to the simultaneous existence of an addictive disorder and another mental disorder, or the intersection of both dysfunctions.

The CCAdicciones model maintains a high recovery rate, far above the average of other treatments, with 86% of patients recovered. Over our years of experience helping people and families recover, at CCAdicciones we have managed to merge several types of treatment, creating a specific model.
