The risk of HIV infection among gay men who practise chemsex

A few weeks ago on our blog we brought you the “chemsex” phenomenon with this article. Chemsex (chemical sex, abbreviated in English) is a growing practice among the gay community. It is characterised by the use of various types of drugs. With the aim of having sex for a long period of time. Where this trend originated, in the United Kingdom (London, specifically), it has already become a public health problem.

It triples the risk of HIV

Given its spread to other European capitals, such as Paris or Berlin, in Spain the possible arrival of the drug known as chemsex is being closely monitored. This week we were able to read in El País how a study by the Barcelona community centre, Checkpoint, has found that the risk of HIV/AIDS infection among gay men who practise chemsex is three times higher.

The article then highlights that “although this is a group that is very aware of the use of prophylactic measures to prevent sexually transmitted infections, the use of several drugs during sex can leave participants in a semi-unconscious state that reduces their perception of risk”.

The practice is usually linked to the use of three specific substances. Chemsex drugs:

  • Mephedrone: A stimulant whose long-term effects are still unknown.
  • GHB or liquid ecstasy: A sedative depressant.
  • Methamphetamine: Causes euphoria, disinhibition and insomnia; and GHB or liquid ecstasy is a sedative depressant.

According to the study, the profile of chemsexers who took part was of people who were:

  • Very young
  • Under 34 years old
  • 54% of Spanish origin
  • Highly educated: 62% university graduates
