Spain Leads Cannabis and Cocaine Seizures in the EU

Last week, the 2017 European Drug Report was published. Following data from the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA). According to the report, Spain is the country that leads seizures of substances such as cannabis and cocaine among the 28 member states of the European Union (EU).

In the European Union, there is a wide diversity of attitudes toward cannabis regulation and consumption. “Due to the coexistence of approaches ranging from restrictive models to tolerant models with some forms of personal consumption.” Therefore, there is a social debate in different European countries. And, perhaps fostered by changes in cannabis consumption regulations in some states of the United States.

In Spain, the prevalence of illicit substance use has been relatively stable in recent years. Approximately one-third of the adult population consumes an illicit substance during their lifetime. The most commonly used drug among adolescents and adults under 35 years of age is cannabis, followed by cocaine.

The latest data confirm that the prevalence of use of both substances, cannabis and cocaine, has decreased in recent years. However, consumption levels of these substances in Spain remain higher than in other European Union countries. Thus, the main treatment demands, according to this study, are for cocaine and cannabis. This coincides with the two main substances with the highest seizure rates in the country.

The following map shows that the number of seizures highlights the presence of cannabis in Spain. As it is the main entry point for cannabis resin produced in Morocco. 70% of the total amount seized in Europe in 2015. Spain also leads seizures of cannabis herb.
