Four reasons to understand why cannabis is not harmless

by CC Adicciones

Cannabis use alters our body and is not as healthy as people believe

Cannabis is a psychoactive substance with high use among young people, who often believe it is “healthy and natural”. When it enters the body, it alters it, generating stimulant, depressant and hallucinogenic effects. And it initially produces euphoria, followed by relaxation and, in some cases, hallucinations and delusional ideas.

4 facts that show that compulsive cannabis use (short or long term) is not harmless:

1- Capable of causing psychological dependence: A relationship of need with the substance may develop. If use is compulsive and there are signs of anxiety, irritability, craving, mood and emotional changes during periods of abstinence, and a need to use the substance to carry out certain activities, it can be considered dependence. The dependent person feels they need the substance to function better.

2- It alters the central nervous system: Marijuana alters perception and causes spatial-temporal disorientation. It also increases the likelihood of accidents because psychomotor coordination is affected. In the long term, the substance causes neurocognitive impairment. And it can cause amotivational syndrome (a decrease in the ability to maintain the normal course of different activities, such as finishing studies).

3- Higher risk of respiratory problems, such as lung cancer: The toxic substances produced by combustion (tar) and the temperature of the smoke are invasive and aggressive factors for the respiratory system. It causes lung irritation and can lead to certain types of cancer, as well as causing respiratory attacks, pneumonia, bronchitis, coughing and difficulty breathing.

4- It can cause acute psychotic episodes: Cannabis use causes changes in mental activity to the point of producing auditory or visual hallucinations, depersonalisation, paranoid ideas, a feeling of loss of control, panic or terror, as a consequence of compulsive use. On the other hand, it may increase the risk of developing schizophrenia.
