The path to recovery from addiction is not easy, but having the right support can make a significant difference. At our rehabilitation center in Tarragona CC Adicciones, we combine a comprehensive and personalized therapeutic approach to guide both patients and their families through the recovery process.
From the perspective of our therapists and those who have walked this path, like Michael, a patient who wanted to share his experience, we explain how a rehabilitation center works and how it can transform lives.
A Comprehensive Therapeutic Approach
The operation of our rehabilitation center for drug and alcohol addicts is based on a combination of individual, group, and family therapies. These are essential to address the different aspects of addiction, from physical to emotional and social.
Individual Therapies
Individual sessions allow the patient to explore their thoughts, emotions, and behavioral patterns more deeply. This includes working with an assigned therapist, who assesses their specific needs and develops an action plan according to their progress.
In the case of families, individual therapies are also conducted in which guidance and tools are offered to understand addiction, manage emotions, and support the patient in their recovery process.
Group Therapies
The heart of treatment at our clinic is group therapy, which constitutes an indispensable part of the process. Each day, patients participate in four hours of group sessions, divided between morning and afternoon with short breaks.
In these sessions, patients share experiences, reflect on their actions, and receive feedback from their peers. This environment fosters:
- Belonging and mutual support: By feeling part of a group, patients discover they are not alone in their struggle.
- Identification: Recognizing similar situations in others allows them to better understand their own problems.
- Honesty: It is more difficult to minimize the impact of addiction when others share similar and real stories.
- Collective learning: Each shared experience enriches the recovery process of all group members.
Michael, one of our patients, recalls his first impressions of group therapies: “At first I felt everything was too much, with rigid schedules and strict rules. But gradually, with the strength of my peers and lowering that resistance I arrived with, I began to realize that all of this was making me feel better.”
Family Therapies
Addiction not only affects the individual, but also their closest environment. Therefore, involving families in the process is key. Family therapies can be group-based, where several family members share their experiences and support each other, or individual, adapted to the specific needs of each family.
In these sessions, family members have the opportunity to express their emotions in a safe space, better understand addiction, and learn strategies to support the patient. As one of our therapists explains, when a family member shares how addiction has affected them, the patient can empathize and become more aware of the impact of their actions.
However, family participation is never mandatory. Family members can choose the level of involvement they consider appropriate:
- Attend and actively participate in therapies.
- Attend as listeners without intervening.
- Not participate in therapies if they do not feel ready.
Beyond Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation is not limited to physical detoxification, but seeks a complete transformation. As Michael describes it, the clinic becomes a “school for life,” where patients learn to recover essential habits, care for their body and mind, and reintegrate into society without resorting to drugs or alcohol.
“They helped me first to detoxify from substances, but also to regain all those behaviors and habits fundamental to the life of a human being: caring for my body, my mind, and my environment. Finally, I learned to reintegrate into the reality of the world without needing to use drugs.”
The ultimate goal is for each patient to regain confidence in themselves, improve their relationships, and develop a full and balanced life. This includes learning values such as honesty, gratitude, and humility, aspects that Michael identifies as essential in his process of change.
Challenges and Rewards of the Process
The path to recovery is not without challenges. Moments of doubt, wanting to give up, and facing reality are common. However, as Michael emphasizes, the key is to resist and take advantage of the support from therapists and peers.
“There were very hard moments, where my mind asked me to flee from that place, but above all from myself. I was able to endure, and that is what I am most proud of today. Thanks to believing in myself, starting to love myself, and valuing what I have, today I can say I am at peace and in harmony. It was hard, but it was worth it.”
Overcoming those difficult moments not only strengthens the patient, but also becomes a source of pride and personal growth.
