How drug use affects young people’s learning

by CC Adicciones

Drug use by young people affects their studies and learning.

Drug use among young people is starting at an increasingly early age. They are at a stage of development regarding the brain and its functions. Therefore, the consequences of using these substances are more harmful to their health and learning.

Thus, drug use causes considerable damage to neural processes. These are directly related to a decrease in learning abilities, affecting the academic performance of young people.

Furthermore, using these substances when performing complex tasks triggers anxiety and panic reactions, as well as increased depression and the possible development of schizophrenia in predisposed individuals, among other things.

The effect of drug use persists for some time after consumption. Therefore, using one day will affect the performance of young people in their studies in the following days.

Marijuana and cocaine use in studies

The use of marijuana, one of the most common drugs among young people, affects the attention, memory, and concentration functions necessary for learning, reducing the motivation and self-discipline required for it. As a consequence, young people have lower performance, lower self-esteem, and a higher probability of dropping out. Therefore, frequent use of this drug causes students to have reduced mental capacity, and their coordination and reaction time are diminished.

Cocaine and marijuana also directly affect the psychomotor system of young people. In addition to hindering the learning process in the classroom, they reduce concentration capacity and interest in everything they do.
