Alcohol consumption habits among 14-year-olds.

The survey on alcohol consumption among Spanish youth, conducted among students aged 14 to 18 in 2014, shows risky alcohol consumption habits. El País has published the main results of the study with highly illustrative graphics of the delicate situation. Nearly 35% of 14-year-olds engage in binge drinking.   • 57% of minors engaged in binge drinking in the last twelve months. Nearly 35% of 14-year-olds already begin attending these outdoor gatherings. At these events, alcoholic beverages are consumed in abundance.
  • More than 22% of minors admit to having been intoxicated in the 30 days prior to the question.

What do they drink?

  • 54% of the youth surveyed drink mixed drinks on weekends. And more than 10% state they also do so during the week.
  • Beer is the most common alcoholic beverage among minors on weekdays: more than 16% have consumed it in the last month.

How do they obtain the beverages?

  • Nearly 40% of minors obtain alcoholic beverages directly.
  • 1.3% admit that they obtain them through the intermediation of a family member.

Evolution of consumption

In the last 20 years, the percentage of youth who admit to having been intoxicated has increased by 6 points (from 16% to 22%). On the other hand, the positive finding is that the percentage of minors who have tried alcohol has decreased, from 84% to 79%.
