Alcohol, Drugs and Driving During the Summer
According to the latest data published by the DGT, last year there were 102,233 road accidents with victims in Spain. And 1 in 3 of the deceased drivers was under the influence of drugs and alcohol during the accident.
Pere Navarro, Director General of Traffic, recalled in his latest statement: “the responsibility that each of us has when one of the group has been drinking or has consumed some type of substance and we let them get behind the wheel, or when we allow the driver to use their mobile phone while driving. We are all responsible and we can all prevent an accident.”
The DGT has issued this statement due to the increase in travel by Spanish citizens on the roads during the summer. During this time of year, there is a greater tendency to consume alcohol and drugs. This is due to the increase in leisure situations that are often associated with the consumption of these types of substances. Music festivals, nightclubs, restaurants, parties… generally involve greater exposure to the consumption of drugs and alcoholic beverages more frequently.
The decision to drive under the influence of any narcotic substance can have tragic and irreversible consequences. Whether for the driver or for third parties who may be involved in the traffic accident.
