Falling asleep: 4 tips to help you

by CC Adicciones

In situations of stress and anxiety, it can be difficult to fall asleep; we offer you tips to help you.

Stress and anxiety are physiological and psychological phenomena that can affect health. It is not unusual for them to also affect sleep, one of the most important areas of our lives.

Even in situations of stress and anxiety, we can improve our readiness for sleep if we remember certain behaviours that tend to improve it or work against it. It is highly advisable to incorporate them into our daily routines because, in this way, at the end of the day, we are helping ourselves to regain energy through rest.

  1. Exercise and physical activity, yes, but hours before going to bed

Playing sport is beneficial for keeping fit and also for switching off from worries and releasing tension. Remember that exercise should ideally be done at least 3 hours before going to bed, as otherwise it could create a “rebound” effect.

  1. Avoid stimulants

Substances such as coffee, soft drinks, tobacco or alcohol are frequent reasons why it is hard to fall asleep. That is why these stimulants should be avoided after mid-afternoon or at the end of the day.

  1. Have a light dinner

A large amount of food at dinner makes digestion difficult and harms rest. It is advisable to eat lightly, although this does not mean leaving the body with a feeling of hunger.

  1. Avoid exposure to screen light (blue light)

The use of smartphones, tablets or computers at nightfall is increasingly common. This practice can alter the circadian rhythms that help us distinguish whether it is day or night. For this reason, you should avoid connecting/checking these devices when going to bed.

Sleep is a necessity for the body, a state that we reach involuntarily, and there is a number of hours we need for rest to have its truly restorative quality.

It is important to promote situations in which we can get enough sleep because we need the energy it provides to face our waking hours in the best possible conditions, whatever our situation at any given time. By remembering and practising these four tips that we bring you from CC Adicciones, we prepare ourselves to rest better!
