After long periods in which the use of certain substances is recurrent and, in some cases, even abusive, the palate deteriorates (as happens with physical appearance) and stops appreciating flavours. Therefore, good nutrition during addiction treatment is key. Not only to enjoy eating again, but also to develop a healthy habit.
Alcoholism can cause nutritional deficiency, leading to anaemia and neurological problems that cause certain imbalances. These imbalances can lead to high blood pressure, diabetes, cirrhosis or malnutrition in more advanced cases.
The use of other drugs such as cocaine or heroin can cause users to stay awake for longer periods than usual. Therefore, there is also a higher risk of dehydration or nutritional imbalances.
Marijuana use, on the other hand, can cause users to lose weight, or even gain more. This is because it can increase the appetite of addicted individuals, creating the need to consume fats and high-calorie foods.
The important thing is that during addiction treatment, regardless of the substance involved, the addicted person is able to gradually regain the habit of eating and hydrating properly; and, in addition, to do so in a healthy way. A healthy, balanced diet supports recovery, not only physically but also mentally. Therefore, just as with practising sport, spending time on hobbies, etc., following a healthy diet can help addicted individuals make recovery more manageable and build the habit that will also help them stay strong in the face of possible relapses.
