Drug use at music festivals

by CC Adicciones

With the arrival of summer, music festivals have increasingly become mass phenomena, where music is often intertwined with drug use.

Primavera Sound, Sónar, Cruïlla, Mad Cool, FIB… These music festivals last several days, which entails more risks compared to a single night out. Some of the risk factors include:

  • Increased consumption of alcohol and other drugs (dosage and frequency).
  • Lack of rest.
  • Inadequate nutrition.
  • Poor hygiene (in some cases).
  • Exposure to excessive music volume for longer periods.

The reality is that the consumption of alcohol and other drugs is associated with leisure spaces, and in many cases, problems arise from a lack of information: other substances are ingested, or even unknown substances containing toxic adulterants are consumed.

The profile of drug users at festivals is very varied, but the most consumed drug at these types of events remains alcohol. Nevertheless, there are also differences in drug use depending on the type of music at the event. For example, at reggae music events, there is higher cannabis consumption, while at electronic music events, there is more MDMA and psychedelic substances such as LSD or mushrooms.

Currently, there are no official national figures on drug use at festivals; instead, the data we have are collected from surveys of the general population and secondary school students. Despite this, it is evident that drug use prevails in party environments and that consumption also skyrockets.
