Cocaine use as a growing trend among Spaniards
Increasingly, Spanish adults are using illegal substances. This is warned by the 2018 European Drug Report. One of the conclusions that should most draw our attention is the growing trend of cocaine use in Spain.
According to the research conducted, 5.1% of Spaniards between 15 and 64 years of age have used cocaine at least once in their lifetime. This places us in second place for consumption of this drug in Europe, after the United Kingdom. The data is concerning, due to the negative effects caused by this substance and the early age at which consumption can begin.
The ease with which cocaine is found in some of the urban centers of our country contributes to the persistence of the problem. Based on the analysis of wastewater, Barcelona appears at the top of the ranking of cities where cocaine consumption and trafficking is highest. Since 2016, approximately 41,500 seizures of the substance have been made in our country.
Among different drugs, cocaine stands out for its addictive potency. The cocaine addict runs a very high risk of suffering irreversible damage from abuse. These include loss of smell, respiratory problems, loss of appetite, and cardiac arrhythmias.
Considering that it is one of the most dangerous illegal substances, the Report’s data should serve to reconsider policies and habits. It is important to warn of the risks involved in cocaine use to avoid long-term problems. The solution is within our reach.
