Animals in addiction treatment.
We say “pets” because the company of animals comforts us and makes us more social. Animals can also take part in psychological support therapies by incorporating them into addiction treatment. In general, dogs are usually the ones chosen, confirming the saying that a dog is man’s best friend.
The aim, as always, is to improve patients’ wellbeing and health as they go through challenging processes. There are many benefits to interacting with animals, and the relationship can also become a valuable bridge of communication between the patient and their therapist.
The goals of the therapeutic intervention are varied and focus on the patient’s progress in certain areas:
- Increased self-esteem
- Improved autonomy
- Strengthening communication and interpersonal skills
- Recovery/strengthening of physical and social skills
- Relief from the effects of anxiety and depression
- Encouraging a sense of responsibility
- Creating a positive bond
Collaboration with Proyecto Tan Amigos
These are, among others, the benefits of treating addictions and addictive behaviours with dogs. CC Adicciones has incorporated this form of therapy by collaborating with Proyecto Tan Amigos.
In this way, we deepen our patients’ motivation by helping them to relate in a friendly environment where they can feel comfortable. Thus, the bond they create with the animals is another element that helps them recognise their feelings and control their impulses.
